Ever wondered what you get when you put five quirky and charismatic boys along into one band? Well, the answer is clear. You get The Revenge Of The Boogie Trout. The band consists of 5 humorous and entertaining gentlemen who will ensure, at all costs, that you enjoy yourself in Rockafella, rocking to the beat of the music in their performance. We spoke with them and were entertained by their hilarious responses to our interview questions.

Q: What is one song you wish you wrote? Why?
A: “I’m a Barbie girl”. We are all Barbie girls, in a Barbie world, in a way. We are like the most popular girls in the school. We are THE Barbie girls.

Q: Seeing as you guys are a band for Rockafella, which is a charity rock concert, which social causes do you support? Why?
A: Care for the animals. We support SPCA and all the work they do to care for animals, especially cats. We also support the Eden School for Autism. We believe there should be some funding for them. They always seem to have drives around Singapore but they never quite seem to be well- funded. We think that funds should get channelled into the school as it will be for a worthy cause.

Q: How did you guys form your band? What influenced it?
A: Well, it was a rainy day in the jungles of Vietnam. We were all trekking together and suddenly we were beset by a Bengal tiger. Through this terrible and traumatic experience, we gained this kinda connection with each other and after the incident we felt that we needed to make a band and play at Rockafella.

Q: If you were a Microsoft office progam, which one would you be?
A: We’d be Microsoft Note. No one ever uses note and we’re like kind of the ‘rejects’, so yeah.

Q: Any last words to the CJ community before you perform?
A: “Don’t talk to strangers”.

The band provided us with many interesting and hilarious responses. Be sure to catch them at Rockafella- if their peculiar name hasn't already caught your attention, their performance definitely will!

Cantus Lutra is the textbook example of a band formed and shaped not only by firm friendships forged, but also by a common experience shared together. The experience that triggered their musical awakening came in the form of CJC's Bangalore immersion trip when they composed a song to remind themselves of their stay. While Cantus Lutra, a band where each and every member is very much at home with each other, embodies the spirit of easygoingness, their performance onstage is anything but, bringing in an exciting mashup as one of their songs. Undoubtedly a band to watch out for during Rockafella!

Q: Where do you draw your musical inspiration from?
A: Songs like “I won’t give up” by Jazon Mraz which inspire a fighting spirit in the lives of everyone, as well as the style and multiple meaning of the song are part of what gives us our identity. Also, we are motivated by the story of Nicholas ”Nick" Jonas, frontman of the successful pop band the Jonas Brothers, who has overcome many of his difficulties in life to become a successful musician.

Q: If you could jam with any musician/band you liked (living or otherwise), who would it be?
A: Nicholas Jerry Jonas, who, in spite of great adversity in his life, is able to continue to produce meaningful and amazing music. We appreciate his courage in the face of problems and restraints.

Q: What makes your band stand out from all the other bands present here?
A: Our interpretation of what music should be, as well as our unique ensemble of performers should definitely set us apart from the rest! We have no percussionist, or drummer, but are relying on a beatboxer instead! We hope this will make your experience more enjoyable and unique.

Q: What is a song you wish you wrote/could write?
A: We actually have come up with a song of our own, “The Bangalore Song” which was inspired by our stay and our bonding with the children of the community while we were on the trip there. It speaks about the sort of friends we made and the good times we had while we were there.

Q: What are your opinions on the current music scene?
A: We feel that the rise of indie music and the many different forms of interpretations of music that have come about today is a positive change. Music should belong to everyone, and not only a select group of people. The ease of media and networking allows everyone to be involved in music making, and everyone can do it quite easily now. We appreciate the increase in the variety of music in the modern world.

The candidness of Cantus Lutra as a band and their many variations in style promise to give their performance more spice and liven up the concert. They are able to appreciate change and to adopt a stand on the positive advances in music today, giving them an outlook which is certain to resonate with members of our CJ community who appreciate modern music as well.

Rockafella IX - Collateral Damage

Edited by Sim May Inn, 1T14

CJCians who attended last year's Rockafella would probably remember Collateral Damage- the then-J1 band that definitely knew how to rock the house during the concert. Well, prepare yourselves for more rocking out during Rockafella this year because Collateral Damage is back- and with a twist. They have decided to take some risks, adding in one new member into their incredibly talented band and straying away from the rock genre they are all used to. With their guitar-playing skills as sharp as their wit, Collateral Damage is certainly one band to look forward to this Friday!

Q: Where do you draw your musical inspiration from?
A: Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy, and Matthew Bellamy from Muse for his amazing stage talent. We admire The Beatles as well because of their innovation and cohesion in music.

Q: If you could jam with any musician/band you liked (living or otherwise), who would it be?
A: Bon Jovi. The stereotype of Rockafella would be the genre of rock, but we believe that a diversity in music is necessary and that in this regard, we provide a unique spin to music.

Q: What is significance behind your band’s name?
A: The name is inspired by fighting and conflict, and that when we are onstage that we will surmount all difficulties faced.

Q: Seeing as you guys are a band for Rockafella – a charity rock concert – what social cause(s) do you support? Why?
A: We support the social cause for channeling emotion through music as well as retaining the integrity of musicians, against musicians who claim to play for a social cause without dedication and instead have ulterior motives. The aim of the band is to be true to ourselves and not to play for the sake of monetary incentives.

Q: If you could have any superpower you wanted, which would you choose and why?
A: Multiple arms to play more proficiently with more musical instruments. We would also like longer legs to perform better athletically.

Q: Would you like to give a shoutout to the CJC community? Any last words?
A: CJCians should have a blast. We appreciate all the support and the privilege for playing for them!

Through their heartfelt and sincere responses, one can almost immediately feel the love that this group of friends have- not just for music, but also for the cause that they wish to support with their participation in Rockafella IX. They are ever ready to take on any challenge thrown at them, so be sure to stay tuned to what Collateral Damage has to offer.

Rockafella IX - Crash Barriers

Armed with a grand piano and female drummer, classical band Crash Barriers is hardly what we might call a regular band and for good reason to. Made up of six unique and quirky personalities, all of whom have been extremely close friends for more than a year, Crash Barriers auditioned for Rockafella in a mission to pursue their burning passions for music, as well as to spread diversity in the musical world of every CJCian. Ever ready to push musical boundaries and barriers, Rockafella will undoubtedly be an exhilarating experience for us to witness Crash Barrier set CJC’s stage ablaze.

Q: What is the significance behind your band’s name?
A: We chanced upon the name when we felt inspired to overcome the odds to participate in Rockerfella and in doing so, we broke the barrier.

Q: If you were given the opportunity to release an album, what would you name it and why?
A: We would name it ‘Breaking Boundaries’ because we feel that it embodies our struggles as a band thus far.

Q: What is one song you wish you wrote? Why?
A: We wished we wrote Bohemian Rhapsody as it is a timeless classic.

Q: Seeing as you guys are a band for Rockafella – a charity rock concert – what social cause(s) do you support? Why?
A: We would support the social cause for fight famine in Africa.

Q: If you could have any superpower, which would you choose and why?
A: Immortality and strength, which are very well-embodied by The Hulk.

Q: What are your opinions on the current music scene?
A: We prefer early classical music to the modern genre. We also feel that it was probably more difficult to break into music industry in the past, when music was about raw talent. Many modern songs no longer have much substance behind their lyrics.

Q: Would you like to give a shout-out to the CJC community? Any last words?
A: It Ends in Ten Months. Also, we would like to bless CJCians for ‘A’ levels!

Crash Barrier’s experiences lead us by example of how we, as CJCians, are capable of transcending boundaries even in trying times. Their upcoming performance on the night of Rockafella IX is certainly not one to be missed!

Rockafella IX - Introducing Strange Jellyfish!

Photography by Song Tao, 2T03
Edited by Sim May Inn, 1T14

Rockafella's only J1 band, the very uniquely-named Strange Jellyfish, is an all-male band. Their musical inspirations and taste -ranging from rock to indie- are as diverse as the many species of jellyfish that can be found in the oceans of our Earth. Strangely enough however, Strange Jellyfish ultimately chose to play mainstream music, performing The Script's monster hit, “Man who can’t be moved” and the King of Pop's "Smooth Criminal". The charismatic and energetic nature of the members of Strange Jellyfish promises a performance you’d do well to watch out for during this year's Rockafella.

Q: Where do you draw your musical inspiration from?
A: We all listen to various genres of music, and that can range from rock to indie music, and settled on some more mainstream song.

Q: What songs are you performing?
A: “Man Who Can’t Be Moved” by The Script and our own rendition of “Smooth Criminal”

Q: If you were given an opportunity to release an album, what would you call it and why?
A: We would name it the strange jellyfish, because it is what we are! It catches your attention, “The strange jellyfish.”, and it should spread our fame and name far and wide.

Q: If you could jam with any artist, dead or alive, who?
A: Yellowcard, Michael Jackson, The Script and finally, Avenged Sevenfold.

Q: Seeing as you guys are a band for Rockafella, which is a charity concert, what social causes do you support?
A: We believe in supporting charity by spreading our brand of music. We would like to perform for both the mentally and physically disabled, because music is a very essential part of life, and gives you different perspectives as well as being transcendental, being able to cross all barriers, physical, mental or otherwise.

Q: What do you think about the current musical scene?
A: The music scene right now.... well, let's just say that we are more in-tune with the older kind of music- no pun intended! Michael Jackson is a timeless classic, and we gravitate towards those sorts of tunes.

Q: What would you like to shoutout to the CJ community?
A: STRANGE JELLYFISH!

Their insightful thoughts regarding a whole host of issues coupled with the very amiable and likable nature of the boys certainly made for an enjoyable chat. These guys have definitely got what it takes to be some serious competition despite their young age, so be sure to catch “Strange Jellyfish” at Rockafella!

The 6th Sense brings sincerity and passion to a whole new level, incorporating their inspiring experience as a band together to put on an unforgettable performers for this year's Rockafella. Bringing to the stage a captivating uniqueness and an intuitive sense for music, the 6th Sense wants nothing more than to give CJ a good time- and let's just say that if you thought Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen gave CJ's Orientation a good time, you will definitely want to keep your eye out for 6th Sense this Friday!

Q: Where do you draw your musical inspiration from?
A: We enjoy multiple genres and exemplify this with the songs we are performing which are: “Brick by Boring Brick” by Paramore, and “Secrets” by One Republic. We are trying to deviate from the mainstream and at the same time, try to relive our early teenage years to people through something they can all relate to.

Q: If you were given the opportunity to release an album, what would you name it and why?
A: We would name it after our own band name, “6th Sense”, to gain recognition and expand our influence.

Q: If you could jam with any musician/band you liked (living or otherwise), who would it be?
A: One Republic.

Q: What is one song you wish you wrote and why?
A: The upbeat and happy ‘Happy Birthday’ song as we wish to propagate positivity, it is our hope that spread happiness to everyone and keep them smiling.

Q: What is significance behind your band’s name?
A: ‘6th Sense' is the hope that we represent something further; some musical insight that others lack.

Q: Seeing as you guys are a band for Rockafella – a charity rock concert – what social cause(s) do you support? Why?
A: We support the ongoing fight against cancer, as well as orphaned children.

Q: Would you like to give a shout-out to the CJC community? Any last words?
A: It is our hope that the audience will enjoy our music and continue supporting us. Regardless, our intention is to ensure everyone has a good time and that this event is not solely about being the best. Please sing along, and remember, it is not about winning, but having fun!

They ended off with a sobering reminder that while competition is indeed fun and exciting, the journey -rather than the destination- should be enriching and that sometimes we should just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Promising to bring a smile to your faces, catch the passionate and enthusiastic 6th Sense at Rockafella IX this Friday!

Orientation 2013: Illumino Finale - Day 5

If Orientation was going to end, it wasn't to be without a grand finale. The day kick started with the Telematch on the field, where the JC1s soaked up more than spirit in trying to complete all the stations in the fastest time possible. They finished drenched from head to toe but with huge grins on their faces, a clear indication of how much they enjoyed the games. The six legions then held their final legion meetings in preparation for the big show-down at the Finale, where the loud, enthusiastic cheers of the JC1s could be heard from far away.

The telematch!

With everybody gathered in the Auditorium, the Finale commenced with a video montage, which showcased snippets of the past five days of Orientation and made everybody see how far they had come since the first day, and appreciate their short, though meaningful, time together as Orientation Groups. With the JC1s ready and raring to go, a pair of JC1s from each legion was invited up on stage to lead the mass dance.

The JC1s then stole the limelight with entertaining skits performed by a group of JC1 students from each legion, telling stories of how their legions' gods or goddesses found their powers. The OGLs then took the stage with the concluding chapter of the story: where Helios, Vulcan, Aurora, Theia, Astraeus and Demeter put aside their differences and finally joined forces to save Mount Olympus from the clutches of Evil Guy. With evil now defeated, the JC1s had every reason to cheer, and they did.

The OGLs led a rousing cheer-off between the Legions, where each Legion's best cheers were pitted against each other, and the Auditorium shook with the stomps and shouts of each legion. The cheer- off ended, fittingly, with CJ's 'Burning Hot' cheer, symbolising the end of Orientation and the igniting of a new life here in CJC, with the six legions now united as one big CJ family.

However, the enthusiastic spirits of the JC1s weren't ready to be dampened yet, and so the OGLs gathered on the stage for the last time and led the JC1s in one final dance.

With Orientation at its close, we hope that we have Illuminated the path for the new additions to our family and made their transition to JC life much easier.

Orientation 2013: Illumino - Day 4

In the penultimate day of Orientation, Theia, Astraeus and Demeter left for the Marina Barrage and had a fun-filled day of activities, including kite-flying and movie-based charades! Photos of the Legions with the Marina Bay Sands as a backdrop were taken.

Helios, Vulcan and Aurora spent the day playing games and each Legion continued to learn more of their Legion’s cheers and built ever-stronger Legion identities.

After this, the Legions played intra-legion games where OGs competed against each other in a variety of games.

Orientation 2013: Illumino - Day 3

Today marks the third day of Illumino! The day started with a continuation of yesterday’s march-in, featuring the capturing of the Gods and Goddesses by Hyperion, the Supreme Commander of Mount Olympus Secret Operations, in order to summon the strongest and mightiest of Gods and Goddesses to fight against the evil intentions of Evil Guy.

After this, we split up into our Legions and three of the Legions had fun at an external venue. The others remained in school to purchase their school uniforms and also played several games as well as Legion meetings.

This is a notice for the JC1s:

The Legions going out tomorrow (Theia, Astraeus, Demeter) are reminded to bring along water bottles, umbrellas, ponchos, and sunscreen (optional). J1s need to wear their PE shirt. Legions that are staying in school (Helios, Vulcan and Aurora) need to bring along a total of $45 for the girl’s uniform and $54 for the boy’s uniform. These prices are for a total of 2 sets (i.e. blouse and skirt, shirt and pants together). Also, for XXL sizes a few extra dollars will be required.

There will also be a temperature taking exercise tomorrow for all Legions; please remember to bring your thermometers. Thermometers will be available for purchase at $3 each for those who do not have.

Today is day 2 of Illumino!
We started the day with a march-in by the 6 Legions; Helios, Vulcan, Aurora, Theia, Astraeus and Demeter.

The Legions then moved on with various other activities. OGs held bonding sessions, where the J1s shared about themselves and got to know each other better. Legion meetings were also held for the first time, where the Legions were taught the various cheers, giving them an opportunity to form a strong Legion identity!

Of course, there was also the mass dance, where the J1s re-capped on what they had learned on Friday and practiced some additional steps to the dance.

All ready for a game of Touch-and-Go!
