Ablaze: Cross Country

53rd National Schools Cross Country Championships Date: 21 March 2012, Wednesday Venue: Bedok Reservoir Ablaze 2012: Cross CountryAblaze 2012: Cross Country / Photo Credit: Benjamin Neo (FSV) Message from Zhe Wen, Captain of CJC Cross Country:
Having gone through a year of training, sweat and hardwork under our coach Ms Elaine Lim, I do believe that the team has what it takes to overcome their competitors and to clock their personal bests, and if better, a medal. Although you guys are not able to come down to support us as the race is being held in the morning during lesson time, I do hope you guys will be supporting us in spirit and we will most definitely do our best during the race. We may not literally cross countries, but when we cross that finish line on Wednesday, we will know that we have ran the race of no regrets. And I would like to end of with a quote: "Endure the pain because giving up hurts even more." Thank you.
The Ablaze team conducted a short interview via Email with Zhe Wen to find out more about his thoughts on this year's A Division competitions for Cross Country.

Q: How are you feeling about the upcoming season? A: I'm feeling quite excited about this year's season because for most of us it's the last nationals that we are going to participate in, so I hope to end it off with a race that we can all look back and feel proud about. Also the team has trained so hard over the past year and I feel that they're efforts won't go to waste and they'll achieve their personal best and even a medal for some!

Q: What are your goals for this season? A: For the guys team I really hope we get into the top 4 for the team category and individually I really hope Jared and Aldrich along with Anant will do CJC proud with a potential top 20 placing. As for the rest of the guys and girls I just hope that they'll give it their all and try all that they can to achieve the highest position that they can attain along with personal bests, to run the race of no regrets.

Q: What do you hope to gain as a team at the end of this season? A: The experiences that we had over the past year through all the competitions, training, camps and what not, I hope that it has brought us closer together as a team and also I hope that everyone will have grown in character, both individually and as a team.

Q: What do you wish from the student body in terms of support? A: The students won't be able to go down and support us cause our race is during school hours. But I hope that they will support us spiritually and if they have friends who are competing, just give them simple words of encouragement in the days leading up to our season. Hopefully with all this support,we'll do the school proud!

We wish you all the best, CJC Cross Country team! (:   Update 21 March 2012 1934h: Results available on "Ablaze Update: 21 March" post.

THE LOVE MONKEYS

ROCKAFELLA 8

Introducing...

THE LOVE MONKEYS

Band Members: Gerard Bong (Choir, 2T24), Dave Lim (Student Council, 2T03), Jonathan Lim (Student Council, 2T25) and Samuel Juan (Guitar, 2T19)

Why did you want to join ROCKAFELLA?

For our band, it is mainly for the love of music and for the fun of it. It is also for Sheng Yuan, who is one of the original members but is unable to participate this year.

What makes your band stand out from the crowd?

We are staying true to our roots and that is by playing rock. Real rock. Hard rock!

What inspired your band's name?

The Love Monkeys were originally “Puff Daddy and the Love Monkeys”, thought of by Sheng Yuan and Michele Lim. However, we decided to cut it down. For no real reason, just plain random.

How did you guys come together as a band?

I (Gerard) knew Sheng Yuan from OG and Sheng Yuan knew Dave. The 3 of us needed a bassist and managed to find Sam.

(Dave interrupts) The official version is that a light shone down in the Piazza and we all met under the light. And then we pulled Jon into it and we now are The Love Monkeys.

What are you looking forward to during ROCKAFELLA 8?

The people! Bong loves the crowd.

What are your band's musical influences?

JOHN MAYER, Foo Fighters, Maroon 5.

Any other comments?

Life is good!

Going bananas for THE LOVE MONKEYS? Be sure to attend ROCKAFELLA 8 this coming Friday, 2nd March.

ROCK ON!

HAIRY STRAWBERRIES

ROCKAFELLA 8

Introducing...

HAIRY STRAWBERRIES

Band Members: Diego Julio Fujiana (Band, 2T25), Brandon Tan (Band, 2T29), Ryan Gerald Oliveiro (Band, 2T26), Teo Ying Qian (FSV, 2T01), Benjamin Neo (FSV,2T17) and Dylan Yeo (Judo, 2T29)

Why did you want to join ROCKAFELLA?

Very simple - I promised myself I would join when I went for last year’s Rockafella. I mean it’s a CJ experience right, you can’t miss that out. And you wanna play music with your best buddies and your family you know? Making music with the people you love.

What makes your band stand out from the crowd?

For Hairy Strawberries, we don’t intend to adopt the rock style so we’re putting aside all the rocky rocky kind of things and we’re taking on the chill approach. We want to bring something different, not so conventional like mainstream dudes.

What inspired your band's name?

Strawberry was derived from a song we wanted to play - Accidentally in Love. And hairy just goes with it. It rhymes. Credits go to Ben Neo for being hairy.

How did you guys come together as a band?

OBS! For half of us it was OBS. And the rest was a miracle. Fate brought us together and we’ll never leave anytime soon.

What are you looking forward to during ROCKAFELLA 8?

The CJ Spirit. Performing on stage together as a band. We just want to have fun with each other.

What are your band's musical influences?

Muse! Lady Antebellum, Eagles

Any other comments?

We changed songs 10 times! It was very difficult because we have different musical tastes. Oh fun fact, the audition day was the first time we jammed together. Yeah it was a miracle! We are a miracle.

Need HAIRY STRAWBERRIES to sweeten your night? Be sure to attend ROCKAFELLA 8 this coming Friday, 2nd March.

ROCK ON!

COLLATERAL DAMAGE

ROCKAFELLA 8

Introducing...

COLLATERAL DAMAGE.

Band Members: Tan Chen Da (1T12), Qori Qurrota Aini (1T07) and Colin Tan (1T06)

Why did you want to join ROCKAFELLA?

When we first heard about ROCKAFELLA, we were actually really excited as it is the gathering of the best bands in CJC  to put on a really elaborate show. One of the important things about being a musician is meeting other musicians and learning from them. There are many others more talented than us and just connecting with them and finding ways to improve ourselves is the reason why we joined ROCKAFELLA.

What makes your band stand out from the crowd?

Our band does not focus on very explosive, theatrical scenes and loud, angry music. We want to make music that is able to connect with our listeners on a very personal level.

What inspired your band's name?

Initially, our band had a line up of 4 people. Our last member was a drummer but unfortunately he was part of two bands and had to leave. We chose this name because we were sure nobody wanted him to leave the band, even he himself. We see his loss as collateral damage. A very sad and unfortunate thing but had to be done.

How did you guys come together as a band?

One day, Chen Da came up to Qori and asked whether she wanted to be part of the band. She was like, “YES!”. Earlier, we discussed that we wanted to start a band but had no guitarist. Qori was initially a guitarist but after hearing her sing, it was amazing. Seriously.

What are you looking forward to during ROCKAFELLA 8?

Definitely the crowd’s reaction. We love the crowd and we really want to hear the crowd get into the mood and sing along with us and show us their love and we will show them ours. We also want to have lots of fun.

What are your band's musical influences?

As a singer, emotional singers really appeal to me such as Adele, Bruno Mars.

As a guitarist, I get my inspiration from Paramore and I really love Pan!c at the Disco.

As a pianist, I get my inspiration from Paramore too but more of Muse. Muse is just awesome.

Any other comments?

We just wanna tell you guys that the music you listen to, the people who perform the music, they all want to spread and express their feelings and hope that you will be able to feel it too. Hope that we will have a great night together.

Can't get enough of COLLATERAL DAMAGE? Be sure to attend ROCKAFELLA 8 this coming Friday, 2nd March.

ROCK ON!

HEDGEHOGS

ROCKAFELLA 8

Introducing...

HEDGEHOGS.

Band Members: Amri Borhan (Choir, 1T21), Jnarthanan (1T21), Nicholas Lim (1T21), Dexter Lau (1T21), Eunice Lim (1T36)

What makes your band stand out from the crowd?

Our band is named after an animal. And motivation!

What inspired your band's name?

Eunice's bag has lots of hedgehogs. And it was a nice mini thing and we didn’t see the band name up there, so we put it up there.

How did you guys come together as a band

We are all classmates except for Eunice. So we all had different talents and so we just got together.

What are you looking forward to during ROCKAFELLA 8?

Impressing everyone and the atmosphere!

What are your band's musical influences?

Bon Jovi, One Direction and Justin Bieber.

Any other comments?

Hope you will enjoy our performance

Can't get enough of HEDGEHOGS? Be sure to attend ROCKAFELLA 8 this coming Friday, 2nd March.

THE ONE

ROCKAFELLA 8

Introducing...

THE ONE.

Band Members: Melissa Ng (Choir, 2T10), Yong Quan (Rugby, 2T19), Kenneth Tay (Rugby, 2T11), Arjun Asothan (Rugby, 2T10) and Caleb Lim (Rugby, 2T23) Why did you want to join ROCKAFELLA 8?

Fame and Glory!

I know this is clichéd but this is our last year in CJ and I just want to have something memorable before we leave. To make our mark. We’ve always wanted to play in front of a crowd.

What makes your band stand out from the crowd?

Fame and Glory!

Actually we arranged the music ourselves - we try to instill originality into our songs. We tried to do things our own way. Cool school kids.

What inspired your band's name?

It is based on the artists of the songs we're playing and we want to get the first place trophy, which is number one so we want to be The One. THE ONE!

How did you guys come together as a band

Actually I (Caleb) wanted to perform and join Rockafella so I approached my ruggers. At first I approached Arjun to be our front man and then after that we went jamming with Yong Quan and some other ruggers. We sounded alright but we didn’t have a drummer so Arjun went on the drums and we found that it was good. Then Arjun asked Mel to join to sing for us and I asked Kenneth to play the bass.

What are you looking forward to during ROCKAFELLA 8?

Fame and glory! To just have fun and have a good time. We're looking forward to the chance. We're looking forward to winning! Fame and Glory!

What are your band's musical influences?

For us it’s Foo Fighters, Guns and Roses, Slash, Justin Bieber, David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, One Direction, One Republic.

Any other comments?

There was no such band until 2 months ago. We’ve never performed before but we’re giving this a shot. We’ve made it so far... We were in doubt if we could make it past auditions but we made it so we’re gonna go all the way. We’re gonna win this thing!

FAME AND GLORY!

For more of THE ONE, be sure to attend ROCKAFELLA 8 this coming Friday, 2nd March.

ROCK ON!
